Fish Species

Check out all of the exotic species Key West has to offer!

What’s the best time of year for each species?

Sailfish- We catch sailfish just off the edge of the reef, all winter and spring long. Captain Sam’s favorite months are March and April. Typically targeted while kite fishing with live bait like Ballyhoo and Threadfin Herring, they are always a fun treat for any angler.

Wahoo- Wahoo are predominately a winter time species out of Key West, but they can also be targeted through spring and summer months with lures and live bait. Captain Sam’s favorite method for targeting these elusive, aggressive deep sea predators is with large live bait like small tunas slow trolled in the winter months. (Nov-March)

Blackfin Tuna- We are lucky to be able to target blackfin tunas nearly year round, with Captain Sam’s favorite months being February-April, also predominantly targeted with live bait, kite fishing, jigging and trolling.

Mahi-Mahi: The fish so nice they named it twice! A seasonal target species (predominantly summer months) but always a favorite species for all anglers lucky enough to find a good mahi mahi bite!

Broadbill Swordfish: Targeting swordfish requires a special trip (inquire directly) but it’s something Captain Sam specializes in and loves to do! (summer/autumn months are his favorite)

Snapper- Our snapper species and target methods for them vary to an extreme in Key West. From fun yellowtail snappers on the reef, to mangrove and lane snappers in the shallow gulf of america, to large mutton and cubera snappers on deep wrecks we can target these tasty critters 356 days a year, with captain sam’s favorite months being October-December and May-June

Grouper- just like our snapper fishery, we’re lucky to be able to target grouper fish year round, from shallow reef fishing to deep sea fishing. the harvest season in the atlantic ocean is limited to May-December, with captain sam’s favorite months being may, june, november, and december

Cobia- Cobia are high on Captain Sam’s favorite list of species to target out of key west. They can be targeted heavily in the winter and spring months, with captain sam’s favorites being January thru April
